CHICAGO — Working with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, CMLS and the CMLS Green Section Council have published the CMLS Green Sheet - Solar Power Fields to quickly educate MLS organizations on a national trend that is already influencing real estate transactions.

What solar power fields do is convey additional data specific to homes that generate electricity by using any technology that captures the power of the sun. In 2016, this market segment, recognized as the photovoltaic (PV) market segment, achieved an important milestone with its one millionth installation. Nearly 950,000 of those installations occurred in residential homes.

“As consumers continue to recognize the economic value and environmental comfort of energy efficient homes, the more important it has become for real estate professionals to share this information with consumers,” said Denee Evans, CEO of CMLS. “Including this information in the multiple listing service is important to ensure a smooth transaction that accurately represents the value homeowners place on these assets.”

The Real Estate Standards Organization (RESO), which develops voluntary electronic commerce standards for the real estate industry, incorporated solar power fields into the RESO Data Dictionary version 1.5 in July 2016. The Green Sheet was published to help multiple listing services identify the most critical pieces of information to include in such fields and answers several common questions asked within the real estate industry.

“This publication cuts to the heart of what multiple listing services need to know about solar power fields,” said Ben Hoen, research scientist with the Electricity Markets & Policy Group at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. “By working with CMLS; its Green Section Council; its business partners like NEREN, Black Knight, and CRS Data; RESO; and with support from the U.S. Department of Energy's SunShot Initiative, we were able to respond rapidly to emerging needs within the evolving real estate marketplace.”

The CMLS Green Sheet - Solar Power Fields is the second green sheet published by CMLS and its CMLS Green Section Council. The first, CMLS Green Sheet - AEMS, introduced the emergence of automated energy models. It was published in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy Better Buildings (USDOE Better Buildings) Home Energy Information Accelerator.

In addition to the green sheet, the CMLS Green Section Council is currently seeking input from CMLS members on success stories about their user training and communication activities related to PV systems and solar power fields. Once compiled, this information will be shared with members as well as the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
