CHICAGO The Council of Multiple Listing Services (CMLS), which represents 200 MLSs with a combined membership of over 1.2 million real estate professionals, has published the 2017 CMLS Best Practices Survey Brief.

The complimentary brief highlights three MLS industry findings captured from an industry-wide survey which CMLS had commissioned Marilyn Wilson, founding partner of WAV Group and president of retechnology.com, to conduct. The survey was completed earlier this year.

The three findings include: the importance of improving industry standards, the significance of maintaining safeguards in a complex market, and the impact of an increasingly knowledgeable consumer. The brief also includes closely related survey data that supports these findings.

CMLS is also publishing the 2017 CMLS Best Practices Survey Report, which shares benchmarking data from the same survey. The report adds two additional benchmark findings and data from more than 30 questions that are now organized into 10 topics. More than 71 percent of CMLS members responded.

“The report represents one of the most comprehensive snapshots of the MLS industry ever produced,” said Wilson. “It contains information that will provide individual MLSs an opportunity to see where they fit within the industry and decide where they can adopt best practices.”

The brief was created to make some industry findings immediately available to the public, highlighting how MLSs are making the market work and safeguarding the information and rules that real estate professionals need to do their jobs with confidence. It also reveals a consensus among MLSs that consumers have become empowered in the real estate market.

“There has never been a better time for MLSs to support their subscribers in preparing for the future,” says Denee Evans, CEO of CMLS. “In making the market work, the survey results show that MLSs are well suited to assist in navigating change, to safeguard the market, and to help real estate professionals meet the expectations of an increasingly sophisticated consumer.”

Along with publishing the brief, CMLS intends to conduct additional research around several of the topics identified within the report and publish articles and papers around those topics. These topics include such diverse subjects such as data quality, technology adoption, financial management, and customer service.

CMLS members have access to the brief and the full report; non CMLS members may purchase the report for a nominal fee. The CMLS Best Practices Survey Brief is immediately available for download.
