Boero and Hahn Deliver at Closing Session of CMLS2010 Conference

ISLE, IL–(Marketwire – October 5, 2010) – Day Two of the CMLS (Council of MLSs) 2010 conference, hosted by Midwest Real Estate Data LLC (MRED), ended on Friday just as it began — with presentations and provocative questions and maybe even a few answers about the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to multiple listing services (MLSs) and the real estate industry in general.
The first afternoon appearance was by Brian Boero of 1000Watt Consulting, who was charged with the responsibility of presenting to the attendees a list of “Sites that you have never heard of, but . . .” Boero did indeed introduce many interesting Internet destinations, but only after giving some general advice to the MLS industry. Promising he is “here to provoke us,” Brian contends that the industry’s major players are very much in a standoff and for progress to occur everyone must start pulling in the same direction. One way for this to occur is for a single data standard to be established, that being “the single most important thing.” He also expressed concern about MLS merely being a “dumb pipe,” i.e. just a conduit of information collected. Boero then proceeded to talk about a number of Internet sites he recommends, including campaignmonitor.com, yammer.com and factual.com.
After very interesting discussions regarding Data Standards and a roundtable of MLS CEOs from around the country, Rob Hahn a.k.a. Notorious R.O.B., took the stage for closing comments. Mr. Hahn, a prolific blogger, was deeply involved in the “back channel” conversations that were taking place on Twitter throughout the Conference. He first posed a question to the audience: “What do we know now that we didn’t know when we walked in the door?” Before proceeding further, he stated that MLS offers of cooperation and compensation lead to data accuracy which leads to compliance, creating the most reliable and complete database of property information. “MLSs do this better than anybody else,” he proposed.
Rob closed the Conference saying the industry has three decisions to make; it has to decide what it is, because it cannot be everything to everybody; it has to decide who it serves; and it has to decide what NOT to do, i.e. what business it is not in. Mr. Hahn finished by saying the industry must also “free the CEO,” meaning that the person in charge must be free to think strategically and do the right things from a business perspective.
The consensus in the hallways and at the Closing Dinner Banquet was that CMLS 2010 delivered in every way, presenting relevant topics and engaging speakers combined with plenty of opportunities for networking. CMLS 2010 truly lived up to its billing as THE MLS Conference of the year!
